Conversion Formula
1 Square Meter ≈ 0.000001 Square Kilometer
What Area Converter does
Area conversion factors are the squares of the corresponding length factors, which is why the numbers are less intuitive: a square foot is not a twelfth of a square yard but a ninth of one.
The two land units, the acre and the hectare, come from different traditions. A hectare is exactly 10,000 square metres; an acre is about 4047, or roughly 40% of a hectare.
- Metric: square kilometre, hectare, square metre
- Imperial: square mile, acre, square yard, square foot

Converting between acres and hectares for plots and fields.
Estimating materials
Flooring, paint and turf are sold by area, often in units that do not match the plan.
Limits and known behaviour
- Squared factors mean small errors compound: a 1% error in a length measurement becomes about 2% in the resulting area.
- Traditional regional land units such as the rood, bigha or dunam are not included.
- Arithmetic uses double-precision floating point, so a converted value can end in a small representation residue. That is a property of binary arithmetic, not of the conversion factor.

Frequently asked questions
How big is an acre in square feet?
43,560 square feet, a figure inherited from medieval measures rather than designed. In metric terms it is about 4047 square metres.
Why is a square yard nine square feet?
Because a yard is three feet, and area scales with the square: three times three is nine.
