What Temperature does

Temperature is the one conversion on this site that cannot be done with a multiplier. Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points as well as different degree sizes, so converting requires both a scale factor and an offset.

That is why 0 °C is 32 °F rather than 0 °F, and why a temperature difference converts differently from a temperature.

  • Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin in any direction
  • Applies the real conversion formulas rather than a single factor

How to use Temperature

  1. 1

    Enter the value

Type the amount you want to convert. The result updates as you type.

  2. 2

    Select the units

Choose what your value is in and what you want it in, for example Celsius to Fahrenheit.

  3. 3

    Copy the result

The copy button gives you the unformatted number, without thousands separators, ready to paste into a spreadsheet or code.

Example

The formulas used

Input

25 °C

Output

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 → 77 °F
K  = °C + 273.15       →  298.15 K

The scales meet at −40, which is the same temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Limits and known behaviour

  • This converts temperatures, not temperature differences. A rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F, not 50 °F, because the offset does not apply to a difference.
  • Kelvin has no degree symbol and no negative values: absolute zero is 0 K, and anything below it is physically meaningless.
  • Rankine, Réaumur and other historical scales are not offered.
  • Arithmetic uses double-precision floating point, so a converted value can end in a small representation residue. That is a property of binary arithmetic, not of the conversion factor.

Privacy and data handling

Runs entirely in your browser

  • The conversion is arithmetic performed in this page. Nothing you enter is transmitted or stored.
  • The tool works offline once the page has loaded.

Site-wide data handling, including analytics and advertising, is described in the privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not just multiply to convert temperature?

Because the scales start in different places. Multiplication alone works when zero means the same thing in both units, which is true for length and mass but not for Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Is 0 K really the coldest possible temperature?

Yes. Absolute zero is the point at which a system has minimum thermal energy. It can be approached experimentally but not reached.
