What Time Converter does
Up to a week, time conversion is exact: fixed numbers of seconds with no ambiguity. Beyond that it stops being exact, because months have different lengths and years contain leap days.
This converter uses average durations for months and years, which is the right approach for expressing a duration and the wrong one for calendar arithmetic.
- Exact conversion for seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks
- Average-length month and year for expressing long durations

Limits and known behaviour
- A month here is an average of about 30.44 days and a year about 365.24 days. No actual month is 30.44 days long.
- For calendar questions — how many days between two dates, or what date is six months from today — use the date calculator, which applies real calendar rules.
- Daylight-saving transitions make some local days 23 or 25 hours long. This converter treats a day as exactly 24 hours.
- Leap seconds are not represented.
- Arithmetic uses double-precision floating point, so a converted value can end in a small representation residue. That is a property of binary arithmetic, not of the conversion factor.

Frequently asked questions
Why is a year 365.24 days?
Because the Earth's orbital period is not a whole number of days. The Gregorian calendar compensates with leap years, and the long-run average works out to roughly 365.2425 days.
Can I use this to work out a date?
No. Use the date calculator, which understands month lengths and leap years. This converter expresses durations, which is a different question.
