Professional grade conversion for volume units.
Conversion Formula
1 Liter ≈ 1,000 Milliliter
What Volume Converter does
Volume is where unit conversion causes the most real-world mistakes, because the same word means different amounts in different countries. A US gallon is about 3.785 litres; an imperial gallon is about 4.546 litres, roughly 20% larger.
The customary units here are the US definitions, which is the convention most recipes and product labels online follow.
- Metric: cubic metre, litre, millilitre
- US customary: gallon, quart, pint, cup, fluid ounce

Limits and known behaviour
- US customary units only. Imperial gallons, quarts, pints and fluid ounces used in the UK are different sizes and are not offered.
- A US pint is 16 fluid ounces; an imperial pint is 20. Recipes rarely say which they mean.
- A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures mass. They are not interchangeable and there is no fixed relationship between them.
- Converting volume to weight requires the density of the substance, which this tool does not know.
- Arithmetic uses double-precision floating point, so a converted value can end in a small representation residue. That is a property of binary arithmetic, not of the conversion factor.

Frequently asked questions
Which gallon does this use?
The US gallon of approximately 3.785 litres. If you are working from a British source, its gallon is about 4.546 litres and the figures here will be too small by roughly a sixth.
How many millilitres is a cup?
The US customary cup used here is about 237 millilitres. A metric cup is 250 millilitres and a UK cup traditionally 284, which is why baking conversions between regions are unreliable.
