Text Comparison
Compare two blocks of text and highlight exactly what was added and removed.
Text Comparison Tool
Compare two texts and visualize the differences.
What Text Comparison does
Two versions of a paragraph, a log excerpt or a configuration block often differ in one place that is easy to miss when reading them side by side.
This tool computes a difference between the two and marks insertions and deletions inline, so the change is visible rather than something you have to hunt for.
- Highlight inserted and removed text inline
- Compare by character, word or line depending on the kind of text
- Work on pasted text of any kind, not only code
How to use Text Comparison
- 1
Paste the original text
The left pane is treated as the baseline.
- 2
Paste the revised text
The right pane is the version being checked against it.
- 3
Choose the comparison granularity
Character comparison is precise for short strings. Word or line comparison is much easier to read for prose and for code.
- 4
Read the result
Added text and removed text are marked distinctly in the combined view.
When to use it
Checking an edited paragraph
See exactly what a reviewer changed in a block of copy, including single-character corrections.
Comparing two log excerpts
Find the line where two otherwise identical runs diverged.
Verifying a copied string
Confirm that a key, hash or identifier you re-typed matches the original character for character.
Limits and known behaviour
- Character-level comparison is computationally expensive. Very large inputs are slow, which is why word and line modes exist.
- There is no option to ignore case or to ignore whitespace.
- The result is displayed on screen only; there is no patch export or download.
- It compares two texts, not two files: content is pasted rather than uploaded.
Privacy and data handling
Runs entirely in your browser
- Your input is processed by JavaScript running in this page. The tool sends no request anywhere, so nothing you paste is transmitted or logged by this site.
- Nothing is saved between visits. Closing or reloading the tab discards whatever is in the fields.
Site-wide data handling, including analytics and advertising, is described in the privacy policy.
Frequently asked questions
Which mode should I use?
Line comparison for code and structured text, word comparison for prose, and character comparison when you need to know that two short strings differ by exactly one character.
Can it compare two files?
Not directly. Open each file, copy its contents, and paste them into the two panes.
