What Grade Calculator does
Before a final exam, the useful question is what mark is required to end at a particular overall grade. That follows from your current average and how much the final is worth.
The calculator rearranges the weighted average: the target minus the contribution already secured, divided by the weight of the final.
- Current course percentage
- Target final grade
- Weight of the final exam
- Required exam mark, including when it is unreachable
How to use Grade Calculator
- 1
Enter your current grade
The percentage you hold from work completed so far.
- 2
Enter your target
The overall percentage you want to finish with.
- 3
Enter the exam weight
The percentage of the final grade the exam accounts for.
- 4
Read the required mark
A result above 100 means the target cannot be reached even with a perfect exam.
Example
Working out what is still possible
Input
Current grade 85%, target 90%, final worth 20%Output
Required exam mark: 110%Above 100% means the target is out of reach. Lower the target, or check the exam weight.
Limits and known behaviour
- It assumes your current grade already reflects everything completed and that the remaining weight is the exam alone.
- Extra credit, dropped lowest scores, curved grading and attendance components are not modelled.
- Results above 100% are shown rather than capped, because knowing a target is unreachable is the useful answer.
- Institutions round final grades differently; a borderline result may go either way.

Frequently asked questions
What if the required mark is over 100%?
The target is not achievable with the exam alone. Recheck the exam's weight, ask whether any extra credit exists, and otherwise set a realistic target.
Why does my current grade need to be a percentage?
Because the arithmetic is a weighted average of percentages. Convert a letter grade to your institution's percentage equivalent first.
