What Watermark does

A watermark marks a document's status or ownership: DRAFT across a proposal, CONFIDENTIAL on an internal report, a logo on a template.

Text or an image is drawn onto every page. Opacity, angle and size are adjustable so the mark is visible without making the content underneath hard to read.

How to use Watermark

    Set opacity, rotation and size

    Around 20 to 30 percent opacity is usually enough to be visible while keeping the text legible. A diagonal angle is the convention for status marks.

    The watermark is written into every page of the new file.

Limits and known behaviour

  • The watermark is applied to all pages. Marking only some pages is not supported.
  • It is drawn on top of the content, so a solid watermark obscures what is underneath.
  • A watermark is not a security control. Anyone can remove it by editing the PDF or by rendering the page and extracting the content beneath.
  • Text watermarks use standard PDF fonts; custom typefaces are not embedded.
  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened. The PDF library used here has no decryption support, so an encrypted file is rejected rather than partially processed. Remove the password in a PDF reader first.
  • There is no file size limit, but the whole document is held in memory while it is processed. Very large or image-heavy files can make the tab slow or unresponsive on a device with limited RAM.

Frequently asked questions

Does a watermark stop someone copying my document?

No. It signals status and ownership, and it makes casual reuse awkward and traceable. It does not prevent copying, and it can be removed by anyone with the right tools.

What opacity should I use?

Twenty to thirty percent for a mark that is clearly visible without competing with the text. Higher values start to interfere with reading, particularly in printed output.
