PDF Editor

Add text, shapes, highlights, images and freehand marks to a PDF, then save them into the document.

What PDF Editor does

This is an annotation editor. It places new content on top of the existing pages: a comment, a highlight over a paragraph, a box around a figure, a logo, or a freehand mark.

What it does not do is edit the text that is already there. A PDF stores text as glyphs positioned individually on the page rather than as flowing paragraphs, so changing a word means rebuilding the layout — a different and much harder problem.

  • Text, rectangle, highlight, image and freehand tools
  • Zoom for precise placement
  • Multi-page navigation
  • Annotations written into the saved document

How to use PDF Editor

  1. 1

    Open your PDF

Pages are rendered so you can navigate and zoom.

  2. 2

    Choose a tool

Pick text, a shape, a highlight, an image or freehand drawing, then place it on the page.

  3. 3

    Position your annotations

Zoom in for accurate placement. What you see on the page is what is written into the file.

  4. 4

    Save

Annotations are burned into a new PDF. Save before closing the tab, because nothing is stored.

Limits and known behaviour

  • Existing text cannot be edited, deleted or reflowed. Only new content is added.
  • Annotations are flattened into the page when you save. They cannot be selected or edited again after reopening the file.
  • A highlight or a filled rectangle placed over text does not remove it. The text is still in the file and can be copied out — this is not redaction.
  • There is no autosave. Closing or reloading the tab discards unsaved work.
  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened. The PDF library used here has no decryption support, so an encrypted file is rejected rather than partially processed. Remove the password in a PDF reader first.
  • There is no file size limit, but the whole document is held in memory while it is processed. Very large or image-heavy files can make the tab slow or unresponsive on a device with limited RAM.

Privacy and data handling

Runs entirely in your browser

  • Your PDF is read into this page by the browser and rebuilt here. It is never uploaded, so no copy of it exists on any server.
  • The original file on your disk is not modified; the tool produces a new file for you to download.
  • Nothing is kept after you close the tab.

Site-wide data handling, including analytics and advertising, is described in the privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change a typo in the existing text?

No. You can cover it and write over it, but the original text remains in the file underneath. Genuine text editing requires reconstructing the document.

Can I use a black rectangle to redact sensitive information?

No, and this is the single most consequential misunderstanding about PDFs. A black box is drawn over the text; the text itself is untouched and can be copied out or extracted. Redaction requires removing the underlying content, which this tool does not do.

Are my annotations editable later?

Not once saved. They become part of the page.
