What Color Picker does
Building a palette from a photograph is a common starting point for a design, and reading an exact colour off a screenshot is a routine front-end task.
The palette is produced by sampling the image on a fixed grid and grouping similar colours, so the same image always produces the same palette.
- Dominant colours extracted as a palette
- Hex value copied by clicking a swatch
- Eyedropper for picking a colour anywhere on screen, where the browser supports it
How to use Color Picker
- 1
Add an image
The palette is generated from the whole image.
- 2
Copy the colours you want
Click a swatch to copy its hex value.
- 3
Use the eyedropper for a specific pixel
The eyedropper picks a colour from anywhere on your screen. It is available in Chromium-based browsers and not in Safari or Firefox.
Limits and known behaviour
- The palette reflects which colours cover the most area, which is not the same as which colours matter most. A large sky can dominate a palette while the subject's colour is left out.
- Colours are reported in hex, in the sRGB colour space. Wide-gamut images are not handled specially.
- The eyedropper depends on a browser API that is not available in every browser.
- There is no palette export; colours are copied one at a time.
- Supported formats are the ones your browser can decode and encode: PNG, JPEG and WebP. HEIC from iPhones, AVIF, TIFF and RAW camera files are not supported.
Privacy and data handling
Runs entirely in your browser
- Your image is decoded and redrawn by the browser inside this page. It is never uploaded.
- Nothing is stored; the file and the result disappear when you close the tab.
Site-wide data handling, including analytics and advertising, is described in the privacy policy.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the palette miss the colour I wanted?
Extraction is driven by how much of the image each colour covers. A small but visually important accent may not make the list; use the eyedropper to take it directly.
Why is the eyedropper missing?
It relies on a browser API currently implemented in Chromium-based browsers. In Safari or Firefox you will see the palette but not the eyedropper.
