What Image Converter does
The three web image formats solve different problems. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which suits screenshots, logos and diagrams. JPEG is lossy and efficient for photographs. WebP does both and is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality.
Converting re-encodes the picture, so the choice of target format matters more than it might seem: the wrong one either bloats the file or destroys quality.
- Convert between PNG, JPEG and WebP
- Quality control for the lossy formats
- Transparency filled with white when converting to JPEG
How to use Image Converter
- 1
Add your image
Drop in the file you want to convert.
- 2
Choose the target format
WebP for the web, JPEG for maximum compatibility, PNG when you need transparency or exact pixels.
- 3
Set the quality
The quality slider applies to JPEG and WebP. PNG is lossless and has no quality setting.
- 4
Download
The converted file downloads with the correct extension.
Example
Typical sizes for the same photograph
Input
A 1920×1080 photographOutput
PNG ≈ 2.5 MB (lossless)
JPEG ≈ 250 KB at quality 80
WebP ≈ 180 KB at quality 80Figures vary enormously with image content. A flat graphic can be smaller as PNG than as JPEG.
Limits and known behaviour
- Converting to JPEG discards transparency: transparent areas are filled with white.
- Converting a lossy image to PNG does not restore quality. The artefacts are already in the pixels, and the file simply becomes larger.
- Repeatedly converting between lossy formats degrades the image each time.
- Supported formats are the ones your browser can decode and encode: PNG, JPEG and WebP. HEIC from iPhones, AVIF, TIFF and RAW camera files are not supported.
- Metadata handling is not guaranteed; do not rely on conversion to preserve or to remove EXIF data.
Privacy and data handling
Runs entirely in your browser
- Your image is decoded and redrawn by the browser inside this page. It is never uploaded.
- Nothing is stored; the file and the result disappear when you close the tab.
Site-wide data handling, including analytics and advertising, is described in the privacy policy.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use WebP?
For the web, generally yes. Every current browser supports it and files are meaningfully smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality. Keep JPEG where a file will be opened by older software or handed to someone who may not expect WebP.
Will converting a JPEG to PNG improve its quality?
No. The lost detail is not recoverable. You get a larger file containing exactly the same visible quality.
Why is my transparent logo now on a white square?
You converted it to JPEG, which cannot store transparency. Use PNG or WebP for anything with a transparent background.
