What Audio Converter does
Converting audio is usually about compatibility: a device that will not play one format, or an editor that insists on another. Extracting audio from a video is the other common need.
Both are handled by FFmpeg running in the page, so the file is not uploaded anywhere.
- Convert to MP3, WAV or AAC
- Accepts audio files and video files
- Extracts the audio track from a video
How to use Audio Converter
- 1
Add your file
Either an audio file or a video you want the audio from.
- 2
Choose the output format
MP3 for compatibility, AAC for better quality at the same size, WAV for uncompressed audio to edit.
- 3
Convert and download
Progress is shown while the file is processed.
Limits and known behaviour
- Three output formats only: MP3, WAV and AAC. FLAC, OGG and Opus are not offered.
- Bitrate, sample rate and channel count cannot be set; sensible defaults for the chosen format are used.
- Converting between lossy formats degrades quality, because the file is decoded and re-encoded. Convert from the original where you can.
- WAV is uncompressed, so a WAV output is many times larger than the MP3 it came from — with no quality gain, since the detail was already lost.
- There is no trimming, normalisation or volume adjustment.
- The first operation downloads roughly 30 MB of engine.
Privacy and data handling
Runs in your browser after a one-time download
- Your media file is not uploaded. It is processed in this page.
- To do that, the FFmpeg engine — roughly 30 MB of WebAssembly — is downloaded from the public unpkg CDN when you start your first operation. That request reveals your IP address to the CDN and tells it which files you fetched. It does not carry your media.
- After the engine loads, all processing happens on your own processor.
- Nothing is retained after the tab is closed.
Site-wide data handling, including analytics and advertising, is described in the privacy policy.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting MP3 to WAV improve the quality?
No. It produces a much larger file containing exactly the same audio quality. Detail discarded by the original MP3 encoder cannot be recovered.
Can I extract audio from any video?
From most common formats, yes. Very unusual codecs may not be supported by this build of FFmpeg.
Can I change the bitrate?
Not in this tool; defaults are used for each format.
