What Lorem Ipsum does

Placeholder text lets you judge a layout without being distracted by the meaning of real copy. Lorem ipsum is the traditional choice precisely because it is unreadable: it has the rhythm and letter distribution of Latin-derived prose without saying anything.

Limits and known behaviour

  • Latin word lengths differ from English, and considerably from German, Finnish or Chinese. A layout that fits Lorem ipsum may still break with real content.
  • Never ship it. Placeholder text reaching production is a well-known and embarrassing failure, and search engines will index it.
  • The text carries no meaning, so it cannot be used to evaluate whether the content itself works.
  • It cannot test right-to-left layout; use Arabic or Hebrew sample text for that.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Lorem ipsum come from?

It is scrambled Latin derived from a first-century BC text by Cicero, De finibus bonorum et malorum. Printers have used it as specimen text since the sixteenth century, and it entered digital design through Letraset sheets and desktop publishing software.

Should I use real content instead?

For final design review, yes. Real content reveals problems that placeholder text hides, such as headlines that are too long and sections that have nothing to say. Placeholder text is for the structural stage.
